Studies have argued that leaders who manifest traits of leadership authenticity will potentially promote workforce engagement. Employee workplace engagement is predicated on several factors, among which is the need to feel a sense of respect, shared ownership, and open and up-to-date communication from the leadership. Research shows engaged employees are more positively driven, demonstrate job satisfaction, and increase productivity. The relationship between authentic leadership and employee engagement had been previously studied in one fashion or another; however, the pandemonium that greeted the events of the COVID-19 pandemic presented an opportunity to further study this topic within the purview of how outpatient healthcare employees in the South-Central region of the US perceive leadership communication. The methodological approach for this study is a non-experimental, correlational, quantitative survey using SurveyMonkey to randomly sample recruited participants that met the study's inclusion criteria. A total of 178 respondents provided the data used for the statistical analysis to examine the relationship between Authentic Leadership (AL), perceived Leadership Communication (PLC), and Employee Engagement (EE). The results of the data analysis indicated that both predictor variables (AL and PLC) demonstrated a positive relationship with the outcome variable (EE). The data analysis also revealed that the components of the AL individually showed no relationship with the EE. The practical implication of the findings of this study calls for organizations to emphasize communication as an integral component of leadership training, alongside leadership self-awareness, ethical morality, balanced information processing, and relational transparency.
