A paradigm shift in building design and construction has been sparked by the need to reduce energy use and battle climate change. Sustainable buildings, which can produce as much energy as they use over time, are a key development in sustainable construction. A theoretical examination into the guiding principles of sustainable buildings and an applied analysis to guide the construction of such structures in the special context of Beaumont, Texas, are the two journeys that this doctoral research takes. The theoretical component delves into the fundamental concepts of sustainable buildings, including energy-efficient building design, renewable energy integration, and sustainable construction practices. By synthesizing existing knowledge, this research seeks to elucidate the theoretical underpinnings of sustainable buildings, laying the groundwork for innovative design approaches. In parallel, the study applies these theoretical insights to the specific geographical and climatic conditions of Beaumont, Texas. This Gulf Coast city presents both challenges and opportunities for sustainable building design, with its subtropical climate, abundant solar potential, and dynamic building codes. Detailed energy modeling and simulations are employed to assess the feasibility and performance of sustainable buildings within this context. The analysis extends beyond theoretical considerations, encompassing practical aspects of sustainable building implementation. Cost-benefit analyses scrutinize the economic viability of sustainable building construction, weighing initial costs against long-term operational savings. Environmental impact assessments examine the potential for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced local sustainability. Moreover, this research engages with the regulatory and policy framework of Beaumont, investigating how local building codes, regulations, and policies either facilitate or hinder sustainable building development. Policy recommendations are formulated to promote sustainable construction practices and foster a conducive environment for sustainable building adoption. The fusion of theoretical investigation and applied analysis within this study not only enriches the academic discourse on sustainable buildings but also offers actionable insights for architects, builders, policymakers, and the community in Beaumont, Texas. As a testament to the growing commitment to sustainability in the built environment, this research endeavors to propel the design and construction of sustainable buildings, making strides towards a more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible future.
