This thesis comprises three independent essays on applied microeconomics.Chapter 1 analyzes the impact of the 2020 "Black Lives Matter" (BLM) movement on reducing the fundraising gap between Black and non-Black beneficiaries by approximately 50% in the U.S. Using high-frequency donation records from a major medical crowdfunding site and difference-in-differences analysis, the study attributes this reduction primarily to non-Black donors. The most significant impacts were observed in counties with moderate BLM activity. Instrumental variable analysis, using rainfall to differentiate between global BLM effects and local rally effects, indicates that the broader social movement had a more substantial influence on charitable giving than local events. Chapter 2 investigates the effects of the 1999 higher education expansion (HEE) in China on rural areas. Using detailed census data and a cohort-based difference-in-differences design, the study finds that the HEE increased college attendance and encouraged high school attendance, with a more significant effect in rural areas. Analysis of a novel panel dataset of rural villages and households reveals contrasting impacts: villages in provinces with higher HEE experienced income declines and worse living conditions, while households that sent migrants after the HEE saw increased per capita income. This "brain drain" at the village level versus household gains highlights the dual impacts of education opportunities on rural development and welfare.Chapter 3 examines labor supply dynamics among gig workers on an online grocery delivery platform, focusing on how task pricing changes affect their willingness to work. Using fixed-effect models on a worker-day panel, the study finds significant negative elasticities of labor supply, with part-time workers' hours negatively associated with day-level wage rates, unlike full-time workers. The chapter also explores how cumulative earnings and individual order pay rates influence workers' decisions to end their shifts, revealing that higher cumulative earnings and specific order pay rates increase the likelihood of workers concluding their workday earlier. This research offers insights into gig workers' labor supply behavior, guiding the development of more effective incentive schemes for the platform.
