Advancing the emerging area of chiral photonics requires modeling-guided concepts of chiral material design to enhance optical activity and associated optical rotatory dispersion. Here, we introduce conformational engineering achieved by tuning polymer backbone conjugation through introduction of thiophene structural units in a chiral fluorene polymer backbone whose optical chirality trend is in qualitative agreement with predictions of quantum chemical calculations. Varying the number of thiophene units in the monomer building block allows us to modulate the rotational strength by tuning the intra-fibril helicity of single-stranded polymer chains, whereby the monomer conjugation is retained throughout the polymer backbone. We further introduce in situ synthesis of gold nanostars in a chiral polymer medium to produce chiral polymer-anisotropic plasmonic nanocrystal nanocomposites. The nanocomposite showed a 10- fold enhancement of dissymmetry factor (with gabs up to 0.64) and a corresponding 46-fold augmented circular dichroism (CD) response upon annealing, relative to the pure annealed chiral polymer film. Based on computational analysis, we conclude that the local plasmon field enhancement around the nanostars is mainly responsible for the observed effect, which is further supported by a signal enhancement in Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). Further, we introduce magnetic nanocrystals in the optimized polymer plasmonic nanocomposite to enhance the magneto-optical effects on the polymer optical properties. By combining both plasmonic and magnetic nanocrystals, we tap into the synergistic effects of both to amplify the chirality of the polymer. We observed high Verdet constant values of ~1 x 107 and ~3 x 107 deg/T.m at 300 K and 93 K respectively. Our work highlights the significant role of conjugated polymer nanocomposites with amplified optical properties towards the achieving advances in the realms of photonic circuitry and magnetic spintronics.
