Damage tolerance, or the relationship between the damaged state and the resulting strength of the damaged structure under loading, is a crucial design criterion for composites. While damage tolerance for monolithic composites is relatively mature, less research has been conducted on standardizing damage tolerance test methods for sandwich composites. The main objectives of this research were to identify and develop standardized test methods and assess a progressive damage modeling tool for use with sandwich composites. Candidate damage tolerance test methods for sandwich composites were identified, investigated, and assessed for standardization. Three test methods were identified, and two were selected for investigation and standardized as part of this research: the Sandwich Compression After Impact (SCAI) test and the Sandwich 4-point Flexure After Impact (SFAI) test. The limits of applicability and standard test specimen configuration were addressed for both test methods. Additionally, a progressive damage tool for monolithic composites was assessed for possible use on sandwich composites. The results of this research have led to two new standardized test methods for use in assessing the damage tolerance of sandwich composites.
