The goal of this dissertation is to provide a thorough characterization of the interaction between soot and turbulence around soot inception region within sooting turbulent non-premixed flames. The objectives are three-folded: (1) The development and assessment of a novel methodology for gas-phase temperature measurements within sooting turbulent non-premixed flames. (2) To provide the computational researchers in the combustion community with the dataset of simultaneous temperature, velocity and soot volume fraction in turbulent sooting flames, and (3) To study interaction between soot, temperature and velocity fields statistically around soot inception region within sooting turbulent non-premixed flames. The first work in this dissertation focuses on the development of the new methodology for gas-phase temperature measurements within sooting flames. Such a technique is filtered Rayleigh scattering (FRS). In order to achieve single-shot measurement, a specific fuel mixture of C2H2/H2/Ar is chosen so that the equivalent differential Rayleigh scattering cross-section ratio is that of air. A series of assessments of this proposed FRS thermometry are performed within different media including hot pure fuel mixture, flat premixed flames, and sooting turbulent non-premixed flames. Such assessment verifies the feasibility of the current FRS technique for acquiring temperature fields from single-shot measurements. In the current work, however, ominous soot interference is detected when soot volume fraction (fv) gets high enough. Detailed analyses are performed to determine a threshold of soot volume fraction below which the current FRS thermometry is applicable to yield gas-phase temperature. It is found that under laminar conditions, the threshold of soot volume fraction is around 20 ppb while under turbulent conditions, the threshold of soot volume fraction is around 120 ppb.The second part of this dissertation concentrates on the implementation of the proposed FRS together with laser induced incandescence and particle image velocimetry to yield temperature, soot volume fraction and velocity fields simultaneously. Measurements focuses on the heights around soot inception regions at Re = 10, 000 and Re = 20, 000. Detailed experimental setup and optical alignments are discussed. In order to eliminate the strong luminosity from the sooting flames, dual-sensor PIV setup is applied for velocity measurements. Such a dual-sensor PIV setup is capable of yielding the same velocity vectors compared to those determined using single-sensor, double framed PIV. Detailed signal processing, denoising and mapping between temperature, soot volume fraction and velocity fields are discussed. Finally, the dissertation will discuss the interaction between soot volume fraction and other parameter either temperature and velocity components or temperatre-rated and velocity related parameters using statistical methods. It is noted that at both Reynolds numbers the most probable temperature at soot locations is about 1500- 1600K. The most probable axial velocity for soot is about 11-13 m/s at Re = 10, 000 while about 18-20 m/s at Re = 20, 000. At both Reynolds numbers, soot with larger fv tends to be associated with relatively higher thermal dissipation rate and higher principal strain rate. In addition, soot structures are aligned with temperature fields (or dissipation layers) and principal strain rate axes at both Reynolds numbers.
