There is a need for sustainable alternatives to high global warming potential refrigerants used in air conditioning. The Radicle Development Center developed a water-based adsorption air conditioning unit, but it suffers from a long generation (desorption) time and a high heat source temperature. These issues can potentially be mitigated by improving the thermal transport in the adsorbent bed through the addition of highly conducting stainless-steel pins. The aim of this research is therefore to evaluate the impact of an increased packed bed thermal conductivity on the generation time and heat source temperature of the system. This is done through adding highly conducting inclusions. This study determined the optimal volume fraction of inclusions is near the percolation threshold. Performance was determined to be optimal with an increasing inclusion distribution in Cartesian coordinates and a constant inclusion distribution in cylindrical coordinates. A maintained heat source temperature is associated with a 33% and 22% decrease in generation time in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates, respectively. A maintained generation time is associated with a 9% and 6% decrease in heat source temperature in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinate systems, respectively.
