Rainfall is a crucial component to nearly all aspects of everyday life, from agriculture and water supply to river navigation. However, when too much rain falls in a short amount of time there can be devastating outcomes such as flash flooding. Prior studies have identified different environmental conditions that produce heavy rainfall, including in elevated convection. This research differs from prior studies that have a warm season focus by identifying the atmospheric conditions of cool season heavy rainfall events attendant with elevated convection in the central United States. A hybrid synoptic-frontal heavy rainfall event type is expanded on with an emphasis on the importance of a south-southwesterly oriented low-level jet. Understanding these atmospheric conditions and the key features of cool season elevated heavy rainfall events is crucial to meteorologists providing more accurate forecasts and outlooks.
