High aspect ratio wings (HARW) are valuable because they reduce the induced drag to lower power consumption for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. To design these wings, numerical optimization can be used to save time compared to a manual design process. High-fidelity aerodynamic and aerostructural optimization are being developed and performed for different scenarios in aerospace engineering; however, few focus on high aspect ratio wings. The objective of this thesis is to conduct aerostructural optimization of a high aspect ratio wing to observe design improvements for subsonic eVTOL. The optimization utilizes an adjoint method due to its runtime efficiency for a large number of design variables. The primary focus is to improve aerodynamic performance (drag minimization) by changing the cross-sectional shapes and twists, subject to lift and stress constraints. In the aerostructural optimization, the drag coefficient decreased by 27%. Moreover, the spanwise force distribution of the wing followed the ideal elliptical lift distribution while satisfying the von Mises stress constraint. From this wing optimization, the results could further wing research and be coupled with future aerostructural optimizations of other aircraft components.
