Lightweighting vehicles in the automotive, railway, and aerospace sectors offers a straightforward strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, notably CO2, and reduce harmful air pollutants like NOx and SO2, which are detrimental to human health. However, the use of magnesium (Mg) alloys, known for being the lightest structural metals, in essential vehicle components has been constrained. This limitation stems from a lack of comprehensive knowledge about their behavior under adiabatic deformation conditions and the significant anisotropy in their material properties. To increase the throughput and limit the lab-to-lab variability of results reported from the Kolsky bar experiments, the Hough transform analysis was incorporated to offer a robust and quick method of automatically analyzing the data. This approach is agnostic to the loading mode, setup configuration, and usage of pulse shaping, and is robust in the presence of noise. The native surface of Mg alloys has relatively low emissivity in the InfraRed (IR) range, which will make the IR detector output's signal-to-noise ratio relatively low. This problem will affect the measured temperature notoriously, especially at low strains where the temperature rise is small and leads to high uncertainties. Two solutions were offered to tackle this problem: first, the design of a high-efficiency double-Schwarzschild optical system that facilitated the synchronized incorporation of high-speed imaging along with IR thermography; second, the design of a high-emissivity coating based on heat transfer and electromagnetic properties that is suitable for high-strain rate deformation.Having developed all the tools necessary to characterize the thermomechanical properties of Mg alloy AZ31B, the design of experiments targeting the selective activation of different deformation mechanisms was carefully conducted. The integration of digital image correlation allowed for the correction and computing of the local conversion of plastic work to heat. Finally, extensive electron backscattered diffraction analysis and providing the pole figures, grain boundary misorientation histograms, and geometrically necessary dislocations shed light on the relative activation level of different deformation mechanisms. The reported results will significantly improve the simulation parameters associated with the adiabatic deformation simulations of the Mg alloys Mg AZ31B.
