During the 1930s and 1940s, a time of escalating violence, many European Jews sought to flee the Third Reich. As Nazi Germany's power and influence spread, Europe was not safe. European Jews looked to countries outside of Europe for asylum. Countries like the United States seemed ideal for these refugees. In an attempt to get to the United States, many of the Jews that fled found themselves in China, specifically in Shanghai. While not adequately safe or comfortable, China became a temporary safe haven from the persecution from Nazi Germany. At different points during and after World War II, the Jews in Shanghai were able to finally seek refuge in the United States.
