This qualifying paper documents the conservation treatment of a Qing Dynasty Ao (late nineteenth-century Chinese Han women's robe). The robe is now part of the Graduate Study Collection and is available for research. The first section of this paper looks at the historical context of this style of robe as well as the meaning of the different decorative motifs and embellishments seen on the garment. The second part of the paper is a complete documentation of the condition, treatment proposal, and treatment report. To conclude, this paper assesses the treatment along with an overview of the different ideologies of compensating for loss to justify the treatment options. The research thoroughly discusses the choices that lead up to the decisions made during treatment. The conservation treatments involved included: hand stitched underlay and overlay supports, adhesives, custom dying, and rehousing.
