This research queries East Asian medicine practitioner mindsets regarding patient activation. Patient activation in the East Asian medicine definition is a relational process in which a practitioner facilitates a patient's acquisition of knowledge and skills to accomplish health care goals. The study examines potential differences in views of patient activation between classically trained Chinese medicine practitioners and traditionally trained practitioners. Classical Chinese medicine (CCM) emerged from cosmological Daoist religious arts nearly three thousand years ago. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) blends a branch of holistic systems thinking with a simplified version of Western biomedicine developed in the political context of the 1950s in China. Patient-centered Western medicine concepts influence East Asian medical clinical encounters. With many philosophical themes running in the backdrop of EAM, this study inquires, "How do East Asian medicine practitioners in the US experience patient activation?" The focus on practitioners in this study elucidates mindsets and patterns of engagement for practitioner and patient populations to draw from when considering clinical partnerships. This research aims to present clinical leverage points or characteristics to enhance personal transformation and clinical/health care goal achievement for practitioners and patients. Keywords: East Asian medicine, Classical Chinese medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine, Daoism, engagement, agency, patient activation.
