Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often face significant challenges in developing social skills, which affects their ability to form relationships and navigate social situations. These difficulties also impact their families, contributing to social isolation. Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), a nonverbal and holistic approach integrating movement, has demonstrated potential for improving social skills and emotional regulation. Combined with Behavioral Skills Training (BST), DMT may enhance social interactions between caregivers and children with ASD. This study examines the effectiveness of an 8-week DMT and BST intervention program designed to foster these skills.Using a single-case experimental multiple-baseline design, four caregivers of children with ASD were trained in implementing DMT techniques such as eye contact, turn-taking, motor imitation, task persistence, and adherence to three-step directions. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test measures, alongside observational analyses during caregiver-child dance sessions, including the "Chicken Dance," to assess behavioral changes. The study found that the intervention significantly improved caregiver-child social interactions, with caregivers reporting increased participation in games and structured activities with their children. Children showed notable improvements in sustained eye contact and motor imitation, while gains in task persistence and adherence to instructions were modest. The Multiple Baseline Experimental Design effectively captured the progression of caregiver skills, demonstrating the intervention's impact across varying baseline performance levels. The findings underscore the utility of combining DMT and BST as an innovative framework for addressing social skill deficits in children with ASD. The integration of movement and structured behavioral techniques offers a comprehensive approach to enhancing both emotional and functional aspects of social development. These results contribute to existing literature on ASD interventions and highlight the potential for DMT and BST to be applied in therapeutic, educational, and caregiving contexts. Future research should explore the long-term impact of such interventions and their applicability across diverse populations and settings.
