Radar allows meteorologists to determine where precipitation is occurring. However, atmospheric conditions can alter the radar beam path, which alters radar output. The conditions that can alter, or bend, the radar beam are found by looking at an atmospheric sounding. In some instances, the radar imagery from radars in the same area may not place precipitation in the same location. Bending of the radar beam is caused by refraction. Refraction of the radar beam, known as anomalous propagation, can detect higher or lower than expected because of the radar's beam bending. By looking at the vertical refractive gradient, it is possible to determine if the displacement of radar images could be caused by refraction. In addition, radar image displacement could be possible by vertical shear. The higher the vertical shear, the more likely storms may be titled. The radar beam could be detecting a different part of the storm which would cause geographic displacement. This research examines radar images to evaluate the magnitude and direction of geographic displacement between radar images, the refractive index and its association with radar image displacement, and vertical shear and its association with radar image displacement.
