As displayed in research on the Intergroup Sensitivity Effect, group members become more sensitive to criticism about their group when stated by an outgroup member relative to a fellow ingroup member (ISE; Hornsey et al., 2002). This finding has been extended to show that unaffiliated third-party bystanders also react more negatively to criticism that occurs between groups (i.e., intergroup criticism) as opposed to within groups (i.e., intragroup criticism; Sutton et al., 2006; McCrea et al., 2021). Understanding and decreasing these responses is important, given that negative reactions may lead to spirals of intergroup conflict. The present work investigated two settings in which negativity to intergroup criticism may be decreased from a Cooperation Norm Perspective. First, superordinate goals (Study 1) were made salient as a potential situation in which different groups may be expected to criticize each other as a cooperative way of pursuing joint gain. Next, constructively framed criticism (Study 2) was manipulated as a way of better following cooperation and politeness principles of pragmatics (Leech, 1983), potentially fulfilling bystanders' expectations for how intergroup criticism should be provided. Findings in both studies replicated previous bystander ISE findings, suggesting that bystanders generally perceive intergroup criticizers as having less constructive motives, less positive traits, and more threatening comments relative to intragroup criticizers. Further, findings showed that while salient intergroup goals may increase negativity to intergroup criticism, constructively framed critical comments are beneficial in decreasing negativity for both intergroup and intragroup criticizers. Theoretical explanations, study limitations, and future directions are discussed.
