Subsidence is the gradual or sudden deformation of ground surface. It is a geohazard that is known to cause billions of dollars of damage worldwide. In addition, subsidence can compound the risks of flooding and environmental contamination and cause damage to critical infrastructure. Understanding the magnitude and location of subsidence along with its likely drivers is therefore of critical importance. Beaumont, TX a key city in Southeast Texas is known to be susceptible to subsidence. It is a petrochemical refining hub and plays a key role in nation's supply chain of other materials as well. Conveyance infrastructure, particularly oil and gas pipelines are particularly vulnerable to subsidence. This study was carried out with the objective of quantifying recent levels of subsidence in Beaumont, TX. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique was used to quantify subsidence using C-band, Sentinel-1 satellite data acquired between 2016 - 2023. Differential InSAR indicated identified both areas of subsidence and upwelling. The displacement rates were not constant and varied among different years. In general, subsidence was more pronounced in urban portions of the city, particularly along the transportation networks.A new InSAR processing algorithm was developed for temporal analysis by combining the features of both Small Baseline Subset Analysis (SBAS-InSAR) and Persistent Scatter Interferometry (PS-InSAR). This new method utilizes persistent scatters with high coherence (as in PS-INSAR) but retains the simplicity and filtering techniques of SBAS. Additionally, data selection was focused on those times of the year where vegetation and other impacts were minimal. This Integrated Temporal InSAR (IT-SAR) algorithm was used to obtain subsidence estimates at several locations that exhibited high coherence through time. The temporal analysis also confirmed that both subsidence and upwelling could be seen in many locations within the city. Mann-Kendall test of trend indicated statistically significant subsidence in the Northwest quadrant of the city the area between HWY 90 and HWY 96.While excessive oil and gas production, groundwater extractions and solution mining were noted to be the primary causes of subsidence in the 20th century, these factors have largely diminished in recent times. The results of the study confirm that soil-water interactions are likely the primary driver of subsidence (and upwelling) in Beaumont, TX. The Beaumont clay exhibits considerable shrink swell potential in response to precipitation events. A strong correlation between antecedent rainfall prior to subsidence quantification corroborates the finding. The algorithmic advancements in InSAR analysis as well as practical results related to ground displacements in Beaumont, TX provide useful information to policy makers as well engineers combat the deleterious effects of subsidence.
