The purpose of this study was to explore how motivation influences cognitive and linguistic processes in second-language (L2) academic writing, using a Second Language Research (SLR) framework. Unlike traditional studies that emphasize pedagogical strategies or general learner engagement, this research examined motivation as a cognitive-affective variable that shapes lexical richness, syntactic complexity, writing fluency, and revision behaviors. Drawing on qualitative data collected from experienced L2 writing instructors across public high schools in Puerto Rico, this phenomenological study used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to identify patterns in teacher perceptions regarding motivational influences in L2 writing development. Grounded in models such as the Cognitive Process Model of Writing, Working Memory Theory, and the Sociocognitive Model of SLA, the study revealed five major themes: (1) motivation as a driver of lexical and syntactic experimentation, (2) the relationship between motivation and cognitive load management, (3) the role of motivation in writing fluency and endurance, (4) motivational factors influencing recursive revision strategies, and (5) motivation's impact on working memory allocation in L2 writing. These findings contribute to the field of SLR by illustrating how motivation regulates cognitive effort and linguistic decision-making during the writing process. Ultimately, the study suggests that motivation should be conceptualized not merely as an engagement tool but as a key cognitive-linguistic factor in L2 writing research, with implications for theory, curriculum design, and future investigations into writing development among multilingual learners.
