Carbon nano-particles have been generated through pyroloysis of a range of hydrocarbon feedstocks using a novel plasma system. Unlike conventional plasma devices used for the generation of carbon materials, this system is electrodeless and operates at atmospheric pressure using microwave excitation. Plasma gas temperatures are typically in the range of 2,000-3,000 K and exhibit properties common to both thermal and non-thermal plasmas. The reactor geometry and the absence of any electrodes make it suitable for the continuous production of carbon, metal and ceramic powders. The prototype system is easily scalable for production.Plasma carbons produced using this system resemble carbon black in their structure, consisting of highly developed aggregates of uniformly spheroidal particles. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed a highly disordered individual microstructure at the centre of each particle with graphitic-like ordering towards the periphery. Particle sizes range from 25nm-60nm in diameter with a narrow size distribution for given feedstock and production conditions. All of the plasma carbons were microporous, with a BET surface area ranging from 94 m2/g to 337 m2/g.A range of partially fluorinated carbons (CFx)n, with stoichiometries between x=0.08 and x=0.38 were also generated using a fluorine containing precursor. Solid State NMR spectroscopy showed that CF, CF2 and CF3 groups were all present. Prior to this, most fluorinated carbons were prepared either by direct fluorination or by plasma fluorination of a carbon precursor. The plasma fluoro-carbons were also superrepellent, with water contact angles in excess of 160°; fractal analysis revealed a microscopically rough surface.
