With approximately 525 species, the genus Viola (the "true violets") represents the largest of 25 genera in the predominantly tropical family Violaceae. Wilhelm Becker recognized 42 sections, subsections and series in the 1920's, but no higher-level reexaminations of the genus have since been published using evidence other than a handful of morphological features and chromosome numbers. A phylogenetic reexamination of Viola used numerous morphological characters, hundreds of chromosome numbers, reports of natural hybridization and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequences. Distinct groups are circumscribed first using classical systematic methods with traditional systematic data. Sequence data from the ITS region are analyzed for 51 species and subspecies of Viola representing most circumscribed groups (representing 25 of Becker's groups) and for Hybanthus concolor and Noisettia orchidiflora as outgroups. Fitch (unweighted) and weighted maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and neighbor-joining analyses place sect. Rubellium and other South American sections basal to the rest of the genus and usually place all Northern Hemisphere groups into one derived monophyletic clade. Yellow-flowered sect. Chamaemelanium with x = 6 base chromosome number is paraphyletic with some groups of Clausen's sect. Plagiostigma (based on x = 12) embedded within it. The pansies of sect. Melanium, with x = 5 to 17, are sister to a clade with chromosome numbers based on x = 10 (probably derived from an x = 12 lineage), including sect. Viola, several groups of sect. Plagiostigma and Hawaiian sect. Nosphinium. The heterogeneous Mexicanae and sect. Nosphinium are confirmed as monophyletic. The strongly supported sister relationship of the predominantly woody Hawaiian sect. Nosphinium with the amphi-Beringian arctic Langsdorffianae is unexpected and remarkable. The ITS sequence data are highly congruent with lower-level morphological groupings, base chromosome numbers and frequent natural hybridization. Sectional groups largely follow Clausen's classification but with some Plagiostigma groups and Hawaiian sect. Nosphinium nested within the highly derived sect. Viola. Morphological characters such as woody stems and inflorescences are convergent and have obscured alliances of the group.
