Freshwater harmful algal blooms (HABs) and cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are an overgrowth of algae within an aquatic ecosystem. They are caused by a variety of environmental factors, including but not limited to, excess nutrients, stagnant water, rising temperatures, and morphological changes of the waterbodies. HABs can be detrimental to the environment because they can cause oxygen depletion that leads to fish kills. The toxins that are released from some algal or cyanobacteria species can harm aquatic life, livestock, pets, and even humans. Besides, cyanoHABs events can damage the economy, lead to recreational, drinking water, and fish and shellfish consumption advisories. Because HABs and cyanoHABs can affect a variety of ecosystem services and the public, they must be researched and managed effectively. This dissertation encompasses a wide variety of HABs and cyanoHABs management, which includes the examination of chemical treatments and their impacts on zooplankton, recreator knowledge, water quality monitoring, and water management expertise. Through the treatment study, it was determined that hydrogen peroxide at repeated doses for HABs treatment induces sub-lethal effects on non-target organisms. In the remote sensing literature review, recommendations were made as far as how to improve algorithm maturity by increasing data availability, statistical robustness, and spatiotemporal awareness. With the two semi-structured interview studies, it was seen that recreator knowledge of HABs and their risks is low in southwestern Ohio and park managers must improve in engaging the public to increase their awareness. In addition, water management varies across the regions, however, nutrient management, routine monitoring and prioritizing recreation exposure over drinking water was a common desire among managers. Overall, this dissertation finds that HABs and cyanoHABs management is sporadic and can be improved upon in a variety of ways as outlined in each individual chapter.
