This dissertation explores the production of natural scientific knowledge in the nineteenth-century Russian Urals. The Urals attracted some of the most illustrious natural scientists from Europe and Russia: Alexander von Humboldt, Roderick Impey Murchison, Peter Simon Pallas, Dmitrii Mendeleev, Matthias Alexander Castren, to name a few. Their published and unpublished works about their Urals expeditions provide fascinating insights into the contributions of the people and places of the Russian provinces to the development of global scientific thought. Russian natural science contributed to transformations in scientific paradigms in fields like geology, minerology, ethnography, climatology, botany, and zoology across the western world. My research suggests that the agency for producing natural scientific knowledge was diffused across multiple human and non-human actors, and the "great men" of science were just one part of a much larger network. Other actors included provincial scientific institutions, local technologies specific to the Urals, peasants, industrial workers, local landowners, and the enigmatic environment of the Urals region itself. The Urals offered natural scientists, including ethnic Russians, myriad non-Russian subjects of the Russian empire, and foreigners, a challenging environment, one in which the need to adapt to local circumstances influenced the final form in which natural scientific knowledge was generated and presented. The specificities of the Urals environment, the contributions of local inhabitants, the activities of provincial scientific societies, the availability of transportation and observational technologies, and the financial support and guidance of the Russian imperial government were all instrumental to the success of scientific research and discovery in this region. Finally, space itself was an important actor in the production of knowledge. The capacious and rich environments of the Urals provided natural scientists with unique opportunities, and challenges, which created a scaffolding that demarcated the possible extent of scientific ideation. Space, environment, and happenstance occurrences that connected natural scientists with the objects of their study were actors in the process of fact gathering and knowledge production. This observation demands that we apply a more diffuse and heterogenous characterization of agency when seeking to explain how natural scientists in the tsarist empire carried out their work.
