This dissertation centers on addressing knowledge gaps and broadening our current understanding of the chemical ecology of susceptible and tolerant host plants of the annual bluegrass weevil (Listronotus maculicollis Kirby). This body of work collectively sought to evaluate and differentiate host plant defense mechanisms present in primary (Poa annua L.) and secondary (Agrostis stolonifera L. and Lolium perenne L.) cool- and warm-season hosts (Zoysia matrella L. & Cynodon dactylon Pers. x transvaalensis Davy) and identify beneficial bioactive compounds facilitating tolerance in response to L. maculicollis infestation and herbivory. Chapter one reviews existing literature relating to insect-plant interactions, turfgrass evolutionary biology, L. maculicollis natural history, and management. Chapter two investigates differences in constitutive presence and inducible defense phytohormones between primary and secondary host plants in response to L. maculicollis larval infestation. Chapter three further characterizes host plant suitability and larval performance as well as quantifies nutritional and biochemical compounds of cool- and warm-turfgrasses within L. maculicollis ' current distribution. Chapter four focuses on the potential utility of defensive priming of P. annua under laboratory and field conditions. Chapter Five assesses the seasonal variation of plant primary and secondary metabolite composition of L. maculicollis cool-season host plants throughout the growing season. Broadly, this dissertation aims to highlight insect-plant interactions in turfgrass systems and serve as a reference for future studies in urban chemical ecology and promote alternative management strategies in response to turfgrass pests.
