Black Americans are disproportionately affected by depression, which is a major cause of disability globally, because of structural injustices, discrimination, and care-related obstacles. Traditional therapies like medication and psychotherapy are helpful, but they don't entirely meet everyone's needs. This study looked at the connection between 74 Black American people with depression diagnoses and their level of physical fitness. Participants filled out a physical activity survey and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) as part of a quantitative, cross-sectional study. The findings showed that physical fitness and depression symptoms were significantly inversely correlated (r = -.478, p <.001), with the lowest levels of symptoms associated with moderate, regular activity (three to four times per week for 30 to 60 minutes). These results support more inclusive approaches to mental health care by highlighting the potential of physical exercise as an approachable, culturally appropriate treatment for depression in Black Americans.
