Tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs), less commonly referred to as pen-and-paper role-playing games, are forms of collaborative storytelling. LGBTQ+ people are often drawn to this storytelling medium. Using gender performance theory in conversation with overall performance theory, the theory of imagined communities, materiality, and queer potentiality, I employ ethnographic methods, participant-observation and semi-structured interviews to investigate the connection between TTRPGs and the queer community. I argue that the blurred lines between the fictional worlds and the physical world allow players to explore their identity through performance and form deep communal connections. The stories and characters in TTRPGs are not separate from the physical world, creating unreality in which players can explore their roles in social structures and how they want their communities to function.
