Feeding the world's population becomes even more challenging because of the decrease in soil fertility in farmlands due to unsustainable farming practices. Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) utilizes technology for crop production in modified environments that enable cultivation in urban areas. By using CEA to supply people with food, the world would reduce dependence on fertile land and preserve soil while producing healthy foods available for nearby communities. One of the key environmental parameters controlled in CEA is lighting. CEA utilizes highly efficient LED lighting resources to grow crops and LED lights can be spectrum-specific for any crop, providing optimal lighting and environment. Mushrooms are a high value crop grown in controlled environments and specific LED lighting is important for optimal mushroom production as well. The mushrooms are produced under precise environmental conditions by specific fungi that can colonize and utilize a variety of agricultural byproducts for growth and subsequently produce a nutrient-dense food. By utilizing fungi's capability to colonize a variety of substrates and to respond to environmental conditions, we can further understand the relationship between mushroom production, light signaling, and the bioactive compounds that form during this process.
