A renewable future requires advancements on all fronts in engineering. Ammonia is currently used as the main feedstock for fertilizer manufacturing, and it accounts for a considerable amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Ammonia, pure and mixed with hydrogen, has gained more attention as viable candidate for a renewable fuel which would generate immense headway to a more sustainable tomorrow. Several ammonia producing technologies currently exist, but photocatalytic and thermochemical producing technologies offer a way to generate ammonia via a direct renewable energy source, solar radiation. Thermochemical synthesis of ammonia requires high temperatures where materials undergo chemical reactions. A two-step thermochemical looping, reduction/nitridation followed by hydrolysis mechanism requires extreme temperatures (~1800 ºC), limiting the technology because of heat loss and material degradation. Carbothermal reduction/nitridation can be implemented to lower the temperature (~1500 ºC). It is necessary to explore materials that can reduce the temperature of the reduction step to mitigate the consequences mentioned before. This master's thesis research aims at reducing the temperature of carbothermal reduction to produce ammonia. Specifically, it investigates the effect of cobalt and nickel doping into aluminum oxide on thermochemical ammonia production. The main objectives are to i) synthesize cobalt and nickel doped aluminum oxide materials with the sol-gel method, ii) characterize these materials for their phase purity, surface area, and microstructure with powdered x-ray diffraction (XRD), BET surface area analyzer and SEM/EDX and iii) produce ammonia with thermochemical looping utilizing reduction/nitridation temperatures below 1200 ºC.Three cobalt and nickel doped aluminum oxide redox materials were successfully synthesized by using the sol-gel technique. These materials were individually placed inside Inconel tubular reactor as a packed bed and subjected to three different reaction temperatures and times. The XRD results of these materials revealed presence of a nitride phase along with aluminum oxide phase whereas the BET surface area analysis exhibited porous structure with high surface area. After a thermochemical cycle, surface area and morphology were found to be different than the original material. Various amounts of ammonia were successfully produced for all three materials at different reactor conditions, whereas no ammonia was observed with the undoped aluminum oxide.
