The purpose of this study was to develop and standardize a risk assessment scale for domestic violence The items on the scale were culled from current published research on domestic violence and were designed to reflect variables which have been clinically significant in indicating risk. The purpose of the scale was also to standardize risk assessment in different settings so that the influence of extraneous variables other than level of risk was minimized. The Risk Assessment Scale for Domestic Violence (RAS-DV) was developed in response to a needs assessment survey conducted with all domestic violence shelters in Kentucky. It was found that shelters are using varied assessment and intake forms, none of which provide a consistent and uniform means of risk assessment. The RAS-DV is a 21 item scale with three Levels of risk: High, Medium and Low with 8, 10 and 3 item respectively. The scale was administered to 96 female walk-in and telephone subjects at two domestic violence shelters and a community mental health facility. Internal consistency of the scale was respectable at alpha = 0.76; overall the pattern of endorsement of items suggests that most women who report domestic violence are experiencing emotional abuse and pushing or shoving. The present study's findings also lent credence to findings in the literature suggesting that witnessing abuse while growing up is a major risk marker for becoming a perpetrator. Validity was built into the scale by inclusion of research-based risk markers and through feedback from a panel of experts and key informants. Further research on the development of a scoring system and on factor analysis would increase utility of the scale.
