Sustainability, a big issue in the fashion industry, is leading the emergence of sharing economy and collaborative consumption to react to the unsustainable nature and ethical issues recently. As part of sharing economy, access based consumption, more specifically renting, implies that consumers can use idle capacities (second-hand luxury garments) by requesting their use for a specific amount of time and for a specified fee, without transferring ownership to an individual. This thesis explores consumers' behavioural intentions (renting intention and intention to recommend) of luxury fashion renting by exploring the service quality gap and investigating the service elements and interactions. This study focuses on understanding consumers' concerns and motivations for partaking in luxury garment renting and further exploring the determinants of consumers' behavioural intentions of access based consumption within the context of luxury fashion. As a service quality measurement tool for measuring consumers' satisfaction, SERVQUAL scale is applied to discuss participants' motivation and concerns of luxury fashion renting, since the motivations and concerns are explored by focusing on service aspects and belong to the variables within the process of service delivery. Service quality gap (gap 5 of service quality gap model) is the gap existing in the service delivery process which represents the gap between consumers' expected service and perceived service. The consumers' concerns and motivations of luxury fashion renting and the determinants of consumers' behavioural intentions of access based consumption are explored by gaining participants' opinions and voices, and the findings are further analysed by cooperating with SERVQUAL scale. The study also evaluates the applicability of SERVQUAL in access based consumption under the context of this research. This study conducts qualitative semi-structured interviews with 40 participants in varied demographical backgrounds in the UK luxury fashion market. Samples were sourced by combining judgmental and snowball sampling strategies, and the samples were aged between 18 and 55 which is an active group in luxury fashion renting and purchasing. This study follows Easterby-smith's seven steps guide to analyse the research data for better absorbing the important information from participants voices and integrating the messy and rich data into corresponding themes and categories. This research has made the theoretical contribution to the academic literature on access based consumption, renting service quality, and SERVQUAL scale. The findings provide a more holistic understanding on consumers' motivations and concerns of access based consumption within the context of luxury fashion, and the connections between renting determinants and motivation and concerns provides a novel perspective in existing relevant literatures to understand consumers' demands on service details. The exploration of the service elements in luxury fashion renting and the building of conceptual framework contribute to the service quality literature in the luxury context. The study also contributes to the SERVQUAL scale by discovering new service variables. The managerial implications provide guidance for luxury fashion rental practitioners to improve their service quality. The findings of renting risks and challenges help luxury fashion rental service to enhance their overall business strategies.
