This qualitative study explores the quality of online video gaming environments for LGBTQ+ gamers. Gaps in the literature regarding the experience of LGBTQ+ gamers in gaming environments are scarce and the recent increase in online gaming due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic increased the importance of understanding how online gaming environments impact LGBTQ+ gamers. Due to the scarcity of research on this topic, interview questions were constructed using the experience of women gamers as a guide to explore possible positive and negative aspects associated with non-heteronormative non-male populations engaging in heteronormative and male-dominated environments. Ten participants engaged in 45 to 60-minute semi-structured interviews to gather information regarding LGBTQ+ participants' experience in video gaming communities, the effects of those experiences on mood and behavior, the effectiveness of their coping strategies, and input on potential solutions to improve the inclusivity of the gaming environment. Responses from the participants suggest that experiences in online gaming environments are influenced by engagement in gaming sub-communities that are inclusive to LGBTQ+ identities (e.g., LGBTQ+ centric gaming groups and gaming communities of games with inclusive content), with non-inclusive and competitive gaming sub-communities leading to increased harassment, bullying, invalidation, and reduced pleasure in gaming as a hobby. Participants expressed positive experiences that can lead to healthy identity development and reduced ostracism if they can find inclusive spaces, while citing the opposite if unable to find inclusive spaces. Participants provided suggestions to improve inclusivity. Clinical implications and suggestions for future research directions are explored.
