The primary goal of this study was to gain an understanding of the identity, motivations, and self-perceptions of male clothing enthusiasts. Ten male clothing enthusiasts were interviewed and asked to speak about their subjective experiences and involvement with fashion as a hobby or interest. The participants included individuals ages 21-30 years old who self-identified as clothing enthusiasts and lived in North America. Qualitative data were collected from semi-structured interviews and coded, analyzed, discussed, and summarized using an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology. While participants reported a wide range of specific experiences, numerous commonalities emerged among stories from male clothing enthusiasts. Specifically, the present study found that men receive many positive benefits from their interest in clothing. They endorsed experiencing positive emotions, confidence, creativity, and connection as a result of their clothing enthusiasm. Participants also spoke about the different ways they use clothing - to communicate different things in different situations or circumstances. Additionally, the present study revealed that participants' interest in clothing did not take away from their sense of masculinity despite it being a traditionally feminine interest. Participants endorsed a willingness to experiment with femininity in dress and spoke of the increasing prevalence of gender fluidity in fashion. While some participants reported experiencing backlash due to their clothing enthusiasm, this did not deter them from participating in the subculture. Overall, they named a growing acceptance of men interested in fashion, and the present study identified potential reasons for the normalization of the interest. Taken altogether, findings presented in the current study could provide clinicians with greater awareness of how their clients may benefit from being clothing enthusiasts, and how they use clothing to either reveal or hide aspects of their identity and sense of self.
