French composer Camille Saint-Saens is primarily remembered for his instrumental music. However, he also wrote a great deal of vocal music, including nearly 150 art songs. Although a handful of these songs have remained in the standard repertoire, most of them have rarely been performed, and a lack of modern editions compounds this problem. Additionally, no scholar has yet undertaken an in-depth study of the art songs of this composer. I rectify this oversight and demonstrate that Saint-Saens's art songs are well-crafted and many are eminently useful for the introduction of French art song or melodie to younger, less experienced singers. In this study, I provide explanations for the general neglect of this portion of Saint-Saens's repertoire based on his own and others' writings regarding music, as well as based on an analysis of his life, times, and place in musical history. I also offer an analysis of his art song style development as tied to his biography. I present an in-depth discussion of the use of "exoticism" in the composer's songs, especially how his travels to Northern Africa affected his "exotic"-themed song-writing. Further, I give an overview of a selected number of his songs based on either their artistic or pedagogical merit. Finally, I submit a brief narrative of the ways in which Saint-Saens's songs affected the development of the French melodie as a genre. The appendices include a timeline of Saint-Saens's life and songs (overlaid with contemporary musical events), as well as a comprehensive list of Saint-Saens's surviving art songs, their publishers, and any known recordings of them in the NAXOS music library or on YouTube.com.Camille Saint-Saens is justly remembered for his musical craftsmanship, gift for invention within the context of standard musical forms, and his prolific output. This study asserts that these same characteristics pertain to his art songs, and therefore this portion of his repertoire merits greater remembrance and consideration through modern publication, research, teaching, and performance.
