This thesis examines a largely overlooked interpretation of the warning passage in Hebrews 5:11-6:8. R.C. Sauer's review of the interpretational history of the passage yielded a taxonomy of fifteen interpretations, especially of Hebrews 6:4-6 as the crux interpretum, over the course of church history, but this omitted a sixteenth approach propounded by Dr Noel Weeks in a very condensed article in 1976 in the Westminster Theological Journal which has largely been either overlooked or misunderstood. Contrary to all other identified approaches to interpretation (including another not identified by Sauer), Weeks' approach does not regard the passage as describing Christian apostasy at all, but rather the final apostasy of Israel, with the rest of the warning passage being read in this light. This renders the passage largely irrelevant to debates concerning individual soteriology which have dominated discussion. This thesis analyses Weeks' interpretation of this passage in detail and considers some wider ramifications of it. It is suggested that Weeks' approach harmonizes with structural patterns evinced by the other four warning passages, accords with a detailed analysis of the meaning and finer nuances of the Greek text of the passage, renders the warning passage internally coherent thus explaining various conundrums that have plagued interpretation, and sees it not as a paraenetic "digression" but as an essential integer in the argument of Hebrews. It is then suggested that one of the most significant ramifications of this interpretation is in relation to the eschatology of Hebrews, throwing the emphasis on collective eschatology. This analysis also enhances an argument for a strong connection between the Stephen narrative in Acts 6-7 and Hebrews, thereby providing a foundation for a tentative reconstruction of the "Hebrews heresy" being addressed in the letter.
