The terminology of "theological interpretation" signifies a spectrum of perspectives in biblical and theological studies. The fact that the TIS (theological interpretation of Scripture) Movement has emerged as a legitimate and delimited field with consistent and well-known practitioners has not dissuaded biblical scholars and theologians more widely from speaking of "theological interpretations" that carry interests and assumptions quite distinct from those shared by proponents of TIS. In this dissertation, I examine four relevant perspectives in "theological interpretation": 1) theological interpretation as commenting on theological features of texts; 2) theological interpretation as a type of dogmatic, doctrinal, or prescriptive theology; 3) theological interpretation as individual openness to the claims and 'God-talk' of the Bible; and 4) theological interpretation as the TIS Movement. This taxonomy of perspectives derives less from abstract philosophical or hermeneutical models and assumptions and more from concrete observations based upon emic rather than etic readings of variegated and relevant biblical theological works. Assuming that scholars, theologians, and pastors will continue to recognize the ongoing validity of these different usages of "theological interpretation," it is crucial to acknowledge them, comprehend them, and consider critically how they all might (or might not) serve God's people. Such is the aim of this dissertation. Put differently, the purpose of this study is to argue that all these perspectives together (or at least their best parts) may constitute a biblical theology for God's people.
