This dissertation explores the theological and literary significance of Jesus' quotation of Psalm 31:6 (MT; v. 5 in English translation) in Luke 23:46, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit," within the context of Luke's passion narrative. Unlike Matthew and Mark, which quote Ps 22 and thereby depict Jesus' crucifixion with a tone of despair, Luke's account emphasizes hope and trust in God as his deliverer, even in the face of death. Luke's use of Psalm 31:6 is not an isolated reference. Still, it is deeply connected to the thematic and theological framework of the entire psalm, pointing toward Jesus' ultimate vindication in his resurrection. The dissertation addresses the historical neglect of Ps 31 in scholarly discussions. While scholars often perceive a lack of internal coherence in Ps 31, this study contends that Ps 31 is a lexically cohesive and logically coherent composition, moving between lament, trust, and praise, culminating in a message of hope in divine deliverance. Using M. A. K. Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the dissertation demonstrates the psalm's internal cohesion and coherence, challenging the prevailing view that it is a disjointed compilation of disparate texts.Through an exegetical analysis of Psalm 31, the study highlights its thematic emphasis on deliverance, trust, and hope, which aligns with Luke's portrayal of Jesus as the righteous sufferer who entrusts himself to God's faithfulness. The dissertation further explores how Luke's narrative incorporates subtle allusions to Ps 31 beyond the explicit quotation in 23:46, suggesting that the entire psalm informs the theological backdrop of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. By situating Jesus' cry within the context of Psalm 31, the study argues that his words are not merely a statement of trust in death but a proclamation of hope for vindication and ultimate deliverance. In conclusion, this dissertation asserts that Jesus' quotation of Ps 31:6 in Luke 23:46 reflects a theological statement of hope and trust in God's deliverance, rooted in the entirety of Ps 31. By situating Jesus' words within the psalm's broader themes, Luke presents the crucifixion as a moment of trust foreshadowing the resurrection as the ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive promise.
