Cornelius Van Til developed a distinctive approach to Christian apologetics known as presuppositionalism, the starting point of which was the self-attesting Christ of Scripture. However, the distinct significance of the role of Christ within Van Til's approach has been underappreciated in the literature. To rectify this neglect, first a representative survey of Van Til's corpus demonstrates the persistence, significance, and consistency of Van Til's appeal to Christ's self-attestation as well as the central conflict within which it arises, namely, autonomous human unbelief. Next, Van Til's understanding of the self-attesting Christ is illuminated by and integrated with several Reformed Christian doctrines within his broader system of thought. Within his doctrine of the self-contained ontological Trinity, Van Til finds the solution to the philosophical problem of the one and the many and thereby presents Christ, who is both fully divine and human, as able to authoritatively identify himself as Son of God and Savior within the course of redemptive history. Within his doctrine of revelation, Van Til argues for the interdependence of natural and supernatural revelation in both pre- and post-lapsarian creation and, given the entrance of sin, Van Til argues that Christ's redemptive self-attestation is necessary to rightly interpret natural revelation. Within his doctrines of common and salvific grace, mediated through the person and work of the Holy Spirit, Van Til identifies the impact of sin as primarily ethical alienation, which is rectified through regeneration. Likewise, Christ's self-attestation in Scripture is properly acknowledged through the internal testimony of the Holy Spirit. Finally, given the grounds, means, and efficacy of Christ's self-attesting authority, appeal to Christ is explicitly integrated within a presuppositional model of evangelism, apologetics, and polemics that is demonstrated in relation to transgender self-identification and commended as a viable, contemporary approach to the defense of the Christian faith.
