This dissertation examines the rhetoric of the book of Amos in its Israelian context, arguing that Amos employs northern-specific Israelite traditions to challenge the sociopolitical and religious structures of the Northern Kingdom in the eighth century BCE. Utilizing a contextual rhetorical method, this study incorporates recent advances in Israel's historiography, archaeological evidence, and literary insights. This allows for an analysis of the persuasive strategies that the prophet Amos uses to engage his historical audience in both the content and form of his message. The study begins with an exploration of the historical Amos, the provenance of the prophet and his message, and the traditions and myths available to him. It then employs rhetorical criticism to consider how Amos invokes and reinterprets Israelian traditions, intermixing Kenneth Burke's theories of identification, grounding, and his pentadic analysis. After establishing the rhetorical situation of the book, the study explores Amos's rhetorical strategy through his use of northern Israelite traditions as rhetorical topoi or how his use of Israel's exodus-wandering tradition, the Jacob cycle, and the cultic practices of his day frame his critique of Israel's religious and moral injustices. This dissertation argues that Amos's rhetoric is not merely a pronouncement of judgment, but a deliberate attempt to reconstitute Israel's identity by recalling its historical narratives in contrast to the current corruption of the people. Furthermore, it contends that the form of Amos's address intentionally evokes Israel's collective past. The analysis highlights how Amos's rhetoric functions within a decentralized collective framework, addressing Israel as a collective people rather than the king or other centers of power. This study contributes to the ongoing scholarly discussion on Amos's rhetorical techniques and offers a fresh perspective on his rhetorical strategy and its effectiveness, which enhances the understanding of the prophet's message in its original context.
