This dissertation explores the origins of a purity worldview in the Eden narrative. It answers the questions: "How does the Eden narrative introduce purity and related concepts into the biblical narrative, and how does this worldview conceptualize a map of purity and danger?" The study defends the thesis that the use of נגע in Gen 3:3 indicates a purity worldview, thereby establishing the Eden narrative as the original map of purity and danger in the biblical narrative.Chapter 1 identifies the thesis statement and addresses background information relevant to the dissertation, illustrating how this project addresses gaps in scholarship.Chapter 2 demonstrates that the use of נגע in Eve's speech in Gen 3:3 should not be viewed as an ambiguous element but as an ideological reinforcement of an ANE purity worldview.Chapter 3 explores how נגע functions in a biblical text where purity serves a controlling role, defining essential concepts and clarifying what is implied in the Eden narrative.Chapter 4 applies Mary Douglas's theory of purity and pollution to the Eden narrative, expanding on the arguments presented in chapters 2 and 3. It demonstrates how the use of נגע not only acts as an indicator of the purity worldview in the ANE and the broader Pentateuchal narrative but also implies the existence of additional purity elements embedded within the Eden narrative, revealing the original map of purity and danger.Chapter 5 summarizes the conclusions drawn from this project and its current relevance.
