This dissertation explores the literary and theological character of wisdom in Jer 2-20. Rather than bringing an external definition of 'wisdom' to the book, this study allows the shape of wisdom to emerge organically from the text dynamic structures of the book itself. It argues that an account of wisdom in Jeremiah should have the polyphonic textures characteristic of Jeremiah and argues that Jeremian wisdom is realized literarily precisely through the intersection and blending of multiple genres-proverbs of course, but also prophetic poetry, lament, sermonic prose, idol polemics, and hymnic praise. Each chapter of this study selects a genre-strand of Jeremian wisdom in order, first, to describe its literary development in the text dynamics of Jer 2-20; and, second, to analyze instances in which the genre is blended with others toward a conceptual integration of wisdom within Jer 2-20.
