Perfectionism as a maladaptive construct is debilitating in mind, body, and soul. This dissertation draws from clinical psychology, theological doctrine, and the author's own psychoeducational research with university students in seeking to capture the lived experience of perfectionism. It locates perfectionism largely in early relationships with caregivers. As the individual matures, perfectionism connotes what psychoanalyst D. W. Winnicott calls the "False Self." In their self-striving toward perfection-an internalized defense mechanism fostering compliance with the False Self-perfectionists often struggle with "adverse consequences" in one or several domains of their lives. Christian perfectionists may also struggle with reconciling perfectionism with their faith. This dissertation proposes a pastoral theological approach to caring for perfectionists based especially on Winnicott's clinical work, particularly writings and practices related to play and playing, in assisting them in living into their True Self as conceived in the image of God.
