In Matt 20:20-23, James and John unwittingly ask to be elevated to the right-hand heavenly thrones of God, for they do not understand the implications of their question in Matt 20:21 nor Jesus's question in Matt 20:22. Nevertheless, Jesus condescends to their misunderstandings in Matt 20:23. Contemporary scholarship has predominantly overlooked this interpretation. To demonstrate the historical roots of the above interpretation, its exegetical strengths, and the exegetical weaknesses of the alternatives, a reception history of Matt 20:20-23 is collated and analyzed.Chapter 1 presents the dissertation's thesis, summarizes the study's significance and originality, explains the research limitations, and defines key concepts. Then, it expounds on the methodologies to be employed and the structure of the rest of the dissertation. Finally, it will briefly note the research assumption.Chapter 2 utilizes four tools of the historical-grammatical method to determine the author's literary intent. First, the tool of textual criticism is employed to establish the text by analyzing the "baptism" variant in Matt 20:22. Then, the minor variants in the pericope are analyzed. Second, the grammar, syntax, literary and cultural context of the passage are analyzed and shown to support the thesis. Third, the Matthean literary context demonstrates that eschatological honor is rewarded to those who humbly serve by the grace of God.Chapters 3-5 survey, categorize, and evaluate the reception history of Matt 20:20-23. The reception history is divided into five eras: (1) the Patristic Era covers the 2nd-4th centuries; (2) the Medieval Era covers the 5th-14th centuries; (3) the Reformation Era covers 15th-17th centuries; (4) the Late Modern Era covers the 18th-mid-20th century; and (5) the Present Era covers 1945-2024.Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation by summarizing its findings and expounds on this study's practical and theological implications. The chapter closes with suggestions for further research and a summary conclusion.
