The first chapter introduces the problem of the six thematic verbs which occur throughout the book of Jeremiah. This chapter names the recurring presence of these verbs throughout the book of Jeremiah a Leitmotiv. The chapter also examines the history of Jeremiah research from Bernard Duhm (1901) to the modern day. The historical examination demonstrates how scholarship treats these recurring verbs in Jeremiah as simply part of Jeremiah's thematic goals of doom and restoration. Moreover, this chapter suggests that relooking at the Leitmotiv verbs as more than just a recurrent theme will demonstrate how the verbs function as the basis for a unifying thread that traces all the way to Jeremiah 31. Lastly, this chapter describes the research methodology of this dissertation which follows O. H. Steck's approach to prophetic books.Chapter Two examines the Leitmotiv proper, starting with the fullest expression in Jer 31:27-40. This chapter will examine the unifying features, structure, and key connections of the Leitmotiv's fullest expression to its earlier stages. Chapter Two will then work backward through the prior stages to demonstrate coherence between the fullest expression and the earlier stages. Moreover, the examination of each stage will demonstrate continuations of previous Leitmotiv stages (e.g., Stage 3 continues major themes from Stage 2), and the introduction of unique elements that occur within a given stage which help separate the stages beyond just continuations of earlier material.Chapter Three applies the results of Chapter Two's examination by further examining the contexts where each Leitmotiv instance occurs for Jer 45:4; 1:10; 12:14-17; 18:7-10; 24:6-7; 29:5, 28; 35:7; and 42:10. Through examining the contexts and how the Leitmotiv integrates, this chapter demonstrates how the Leitmotiv unifies the respective chapters where the writer integrates it. Moreover, the examination of the Leitmotiv's integration also reveals how the contextual elements from every passage also continue into the following stage.Chapter Four returns to the fullest expression of the Leitmotiv. This chapter will examine how the Leitmotiv integrates into Jeremiah 31 as a conclusion to the smaller Book of Comfort (Jeremiah 30 -31). Moreover, this chapter will apply the exegetical insights gleaned from Chapter 3 to relook at the Leitmotiv and its exegetical implications as a unifying phenomenon in the book of Jeremiah.Chapter Five will provide a summary of each chapter of this dissertation along with the contributions of the study. This chapter will conclude by suggesting areas for further research for the Leitmotiv and other parts of Jeremiah, which this dissertation could not address due to space, and how the Leitmotiv may influence or relate to other passages among the prophets more broadly.
