The present research addresses questions about the metaphors for injustice and oppression in the Hebrew Bible. How did the biblical writers conceptualize injustice and oppression? Specifically, what groups of verbal metaphors did the biblical writers use to construe unjust and oppressive actions? How do the metaphors communicate their ideas and values about the concepts and, in return, shape their thoughts about these topics? Previous research has studied injustice with terminological, social-scientific, and comparative approaches. Cultural metaphors portraying injustice and oppression, however, have been given little treatment. Chapter one introduces the research problem, limits the corpus of study to clusters of verbal metaphors for injustice and oppression in the Hebrew Bible, and reviews the state of research on metaphors for injustice. It also shows the need for metaphor-oriented research. Chapter 2 gives the methodology for the dissertation. It summarizes four fundamental insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory that serve as the foundation for analysis. These insights include the mapping of new knowledge from the source domain to a target domain, the systematicity of metaphors, the vitality of conventional metaphors, and the power of metaphors to create a metaphorical reality. Critiques of key insights are addressed and guidelines for metaphor analysis are also given.Chapters 3 through 5 analyze metaphors grouped around three conceptual domains: INGESTION, FRAGMENTATION, and MOTION. Chapter 3 analyzes metaphors for INJUSTICE IS INGESTING, which systematically express acts of injustice and oppression as humans and animals consuming objects, concepts, or people. Chapter 4 analyzes metaphors for INJUSTICE IS FRAGMENTING, which conceive of injustice and oppression as destroying an object by fragmenting it so that it breaks into multiple pieces and can no longer be used for its original function.Chapter 5 analyzes metaphors for INJUSTICE IS MOVING, which depict unjust and oppressive behavior as a figure moving through space and as forcibly moving another entity. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation and summarizes all the research to show that the biblical authors use a system of metaphors in the Hebrew Bible to construe injustice and oppression. Moreover, this chapter outlines areas for further research.
