The purpose of the dissertation was to analyze to what extent Alexander Maclaren used illustrations in his preaching. The researcher analyzed one hundred random sermons from Alexander Maclaren's Expositions of Holy Scripture series to answer the question, To what extent did Maclaren use illustrations in his preaching? The method for analyzing Maclaren's use of illustrations was based on Broadus's A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons and adapted from Keith Taylor's dissertation examining the functional elements in sermons preached to men. Broadus provided descriptions on the kinds of illustrations, their various purposes, and their sources. The researcher used the analysis guide concerning these components to assess Maclaren's use of illustration in selected sermons.Alexander Maclaren practiced expository preaching and pastored Union Chapel in Manchester for forty-five years. Maclaren demonstrated mastery in his use of sermon illustrations throughout his preaching career. Toward the end of his life, Maclaren compiled his sermons into the Expositions of Holy Scripture series, which is the primary source for the sermons examined in this project.
