The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the use of memorable language in John Bisagno's preaching. The language used by leaders, that is, their diction, sentence syntax, grammar, and use of rhetorical or literary devices, is recognized as a powerful asset, enhancing the leader's ability to lead, inspire, and persuade followers. History records that leaders, fluent in the art and use of language, lead in pied-piper fashion, setting the direction for organizations and even nations. Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King are only a few examples. James Humes, a presidential speech writer in the late twentieth century, discovered that many speeches of successful world leaders shared a common characteristic. They contained some combination of a set of five rhetorical devices: contrast, rhyme, echo, alliteration, and metaphor. Speaking of Humes's work, Jerry Vines and Jim Shaddix labeled the set as memorable language. Beginning with Humes's concept of memorable language, an analytical tool was developed to measure the use of memorable language. The tool was then applied to the preaching of John Bisagno, the past visionary leader and pastor of Houston's First Baptist Church. A historical context for memorable language was framed from a broad set of ancient rhetorical writings and then, specifically, from noted ancient rhetorical textbooks. Finally, future research opportunities were presented. This study represents the first application of memorable language analysis to preaching. The findings revealed that the preaching of John Bisagno contained a high degree of memorable language.
