Christian leaders, specifically chaplains, providing spiritual care and leadership in the twenty-first century serve and lead amid an unprecedented shifting of terrain, influences, and connectedness. The effect of such an environment on an organization and chaplaincy ministry is challenging and ripe with opportunities. Chaplains provide leadership and pastoral ministry within their contextualized settings. All the while, chaplains are responsible for stewarding the influence entrusted to them by God.The goal of this research was to examine and analyze the relationship between leadership competencies and steward leader characteristics, specifically among Southern Baptist chaplains-correctional, healthcare, and military. A Delphi panel identified fourteen chaplain leadership competencies that were incorporated into the final survey, along with steward leader competencies and characteristics. Three hundred seventy-eight completed surveys were compiled and analyzed. The Kruskal-Wallis H test indicated a statistically significant difference among the chaplain groups. The findings suggest that the practice of chaplain leadership competencies varies by chaplain group. The research included two questions to determine whether and to what extent a relationship existed between leadership competencies and steward leader characteristics. Kendall's tau-b test was performed to explore the existence of a relationship. While some statistically significant correlations were found, all the relationships were weak, suggesting limited connections between steward leader characteristics and chaplain leadership competencies. Ordinal logistics regression was conducted to determine whether any predictive relationships existed. The results identified some statistically significant predictive relationships, but the high percentage of zero frequencies raised reliability concerns. All three null hypotheses were rejected.
