In mid-nineteenth-century America, Landmarkism became a prominent theological movement. Yet, after 180 years, only a small segment of Associational and Southern Baptists recall it. This dissertation examines the ascension and degradation of the Landmark Movement through the writings of its leaders and modern-day scholarship. It argues that modern-day portrayals of the Landmark Movement are jeopardizing the credibility of its origin in Baptist history and the significance of its contributions to Baptist life. This work answers the question: "What factors affected the rise and decline of the movement, that have contributed to its prominence and loss of awareness among the Baptist denomination?".
