The project director is an associate pastor at Freedom Church in Lincolnton, NC, affiliated with the Pillar Church Planting Network (hereafter the Pillar Network or Pillar). The project director identified the need for churches to clarify the role of the associate pastor serving within a plurality of elders. This ministry project aims to create a manual that will help churches in the Pillar Network navigate the roles and relationships of the associate pastor in a plurality of elders. In chapter two, the project director examined 1 Pet 1:1¬-5, Eph 4:11, 1 Tim 5:17¬¬-18, and synthesized Acts 14:19¬-23, Jas 5:14, and Titus 1:5. From these texts, the project director gleaned four principles that define the office of elder and clarify the associate pastor's role as an elder. Those principles are 1) there is only one office of elder, 2) a plurality of elders normally occupies that office, 3) those elders have equal authority, and 4) those elders will have diverse gifts. The project director used these principles and their application to the associate pastor's role to inform the manual he created. In chapter three, the project director researched the history of associate pastoral ministry. He traced the development of the office of elder with a special emphasis on second elders throughout church history. He also noted when the churches or denominations divided the office of elder and whether elder equality, also known as parity, was practiced or rejected. He ended with a focus on the associate pastor in twenty-first-century Southern Baptist contexts. The project director further examined how the roles and relationships between the lead and associate pastor change as they interact as both elders and staff members. He also explored how pastors can navigate those dynamics to avoid conflict. The project director examined common causes of conflict in leadership teams and the corresponding elements of healthy leadership teams. Finally, the project director identified two concerning trends in associate pastoral ministry and reviewed the most influential books on associate pastors.Much of this research was reformatted and assembled into a manual for local churches. The manual included two sections: 1) Understanding the Office and 2) Navigating the Two Tables. The six chapters included engaging and interactive content, including reflection questions, action items, recommended resources, and space to take notes. A graphic designer transformed the manuscript into an attractive digital resource. Finally, the project director assembled an expert panel of six lead and associate pastors in the Pillar Network to evaluate the research and the manual. The project director utilized the expert panel's feedback to evaluate and improve the manual. He also reflected on the project and how he has grown personally and professionally.
