This dissertation is a comparison and contrast of the practice of the Big Idea and Theological Focus approaches in preaching. Advocates of the Big Idea philosophy assert that sermons should communicate a single dominant idea derived from the overarching concept of a biblical passage, including a subject and its complement. By contrast, proponents of the Theological Focus philosophy emphasize a label for the authorial doings of a text, which cannot substitute for the text itself. In this study, the researcher analyzed sermons from Stephen Rummage and Abraham Kuruvilla to determine the extent to which the practices of these philosophies align and diverge. The study includes an analysis of nine sermons from each preacher, across different biblical genres. The two hypotheses were (1) Rummage and Kuruvilla both would submit a Big Idea according to Robinson's description in five out of nine of the analyzed sermons, meaning a majority of the sermons, and (2) any differences between the Big Idea and Theological Focus philosophies would not be apparent in the delivered sermons. The findings suggest that, while the Theological Focus proponents deny the use of a Big Idea, the delivered sermons from both preachers exhibit overarching sermon propositions. This study contributes to homiletical scholarship by evaluating whether the Theological Focus approach represents a distinct methodology or aligns with long-standing rhetorical and homiletical practices. The findings provide insight into how preachers communicate the authorial intent of the biblical passage in their sermons.
