This dissertation investigates the definition and terminology of Christian martyrdom. Overall, the project offers a narrow definition of Christian martyrdom, explores how and why the term "martyr" expanded throughout church history, and examines a new term for Christianity to use in situations of premature Christian death that do not meet a narrow definition of Christian martyrdom. The researcher's motivation is to honor all Christians who die for the sake of Christ and, if pertinent, propose a new term for use in such situations.Chapter 1 presents Christian martyrdom as an intriguing yet complicated and emotional topic and introduces three primary research questions concerning Christian martyrdom. The chapter then presents the thesis statement, which contends that Christianity should use the term "risker" in situations of premature Christian death that do not meet a narrow definition of Christian martyrdom. The chapter also includes the importance and relevance of the topic, its uniqueness, definitions, and delimitations, as well as research methodology.Chapter 2 explores what constitutes Christian martyrdom by first overviewing the current landscape of defining "martyr." Some believe that defining Christian martyrdom is unachievable, while others argue for a broader, narrower, or ever-evolving definition. The chapter then traces the semantic development of the Greek term μάρτυς from the eighth century BC through the second century AD, analyzing the deaths of several individuals in the NT and early church. The chapter closes with a proposed definition of Christian martyrdom from the NT and early church.Chapter 3 follows notable expansions of understanding what constitutes a Christian martyr through the two thousand years of church history. The chapter analyzes four different periods (AD 193-324, 324-1400, 1400-1600, and 1600 to the present) and discusses notable expansions of each period. The chapter seeks to understand why these expansions occurred and shows that the present-day understanding of Christian martyrdom has significantly widened since the NT and early church.Chapter 4 examines introducing a new term to refer to situations of premature Christian death that do not meet a narrow definition of Christian martyrdom. The chapter discusses two historical developments, the rise of the term "confessor" and the three-fold categorization of red, white, and green martyrdom, to establish precedents of using new words to clarify and classify Christian martyrdom. Next, the chapter explores and evaluates three English words from their lexical forms and contexts in the NT and early church as a possible alternative term to use for premature Christian death not meeting a narrow definition of Christian martyrdom: "overcomer," "the faithful," and "risker." The chapter selects "risker" as the best term and then closes by submitting missiological application and discussing a Theology of Risk for the church.Chapter 5 closes the dissertation by restating the research questions and thesis, reviewing the research findings and argumentation, and proposing areas for future research. The researcher also adds an Appendix for consideration. This addendum presents and discusses test cases of premature Christian death from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries for determining Christian martyrdom in these situations.
